A short personal essay on Stand-up Comedy

Burning her sins. Source: Stocknap

Stand-up comedy is the art of telling funny jokes. An unfunny joke is still quite a joke. It’s an attempted funny joke. We will debate this later.

When I first started doing comedy, it was only a means for me to make people laugh. I would write a joke, any joke and try it on stage to see if it elicits a laughter. Some of my jokes worked and most of my jokes bombed. That’s the process. However, this is not about the process. This is about what comedy means to life.

Comedy is a deeply personal art form. It is fucking personal. Many of my jokes have turned out to be real life stories or some form of concoction between reality and fiction. After having been on stage a few years and going through the drill of writing jokes, I have no doubt that my jokes in future are going to come from real life.

From a means to making people laugh, it has become a sort of a means to express life.

Now, having said that, life sucks quite often and caresses once in a while. Not yours? Fuck you. Comedy is an outlet to make fun of the vicissitudes of life. Google vicissitudes. Every time I am feeling emotive about something, I want to write a joke about it, when I am by myself.

Sometimes, I succeed in writing something funny. Mostly, I don’t. But, I try.

The fact that I am a comedian and I can try to carve a joke out of anything that life throws at me is uplifting. They say if you are going through hell, keep going. I say…

If you are going through hell, make a joke out of it.

I thought I could write a long piece, but this is it. That’s all I have to say right now.

Thanks for reading through.

P.S. The picture has nothing to do with the post. It’s the only joke here.
